Dhanush has manged to earn a decent name with his latest hit Raghuvaran BTech. He is now back with the dubbed version of his national award winning film Pandem Kollu, which has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

Story:-

The story of the film is based on the annual cock fights that takes place between Pothu Raju (Jay Palan) and Ram Swami (Naren) in the Palnadu area. Like every year, Ranga Swami gets defeated by Pothu Raju, who is ably supported by Durga (Kishore) and Lingam (Dhanush).

As time passes by, Lingam falls in love with Irin(Taapsee) and also develops a huge misunderstanding with Pothu Raju during one of the cock fights.Rest of the story is about how Lingam makes his way to the top, and also clears the misunderstanding with his boss.

Plus Points:-

Credit should go to director Vetrimaran for executing a script set up in the rural atmosphere. Major highlight of the film is the lead star Dhanush. The way he has gone about his role and has presented himself in a mass look is just outstanding. His expressions throughout the film are to die for and only proves the fact that he was the deserving winner of the National Award.

Taapsee is superb as the Aglo-Indian girl, and gives cute expressions throughout the film. Tamil actors Naren, Kishore and Jayapalan have done a decent job in their respective roles. First half of the film is quite entertaining. The way love track between Dhanush and Taapsee has been designed is hilarious. The cock fight which is showcased during the interval block is good. Human emotions during the second half will connect with the audience well.

Minus Points:-

Major drawback of the film is the excessive length. Second half is a tad long and has been stretched in many places. Like every other dubbed film, Pandem Kollu also suffers with the nativity factor. The characters showcased and the entire set up is a bit difficult for Telugu audience to digest.

Second half gets completely emotional as there is no proper entertainment during this part. Lack of known faces might also go against the reach of this film.

Technical Aspects:-

Director Vetrimaran walks away with the honours in the technical department. The way he has weaved the story with an intriguing line is good. He also succeeded in extracting superb performances from his artists and gives a realistic look to the film.

G V Prakash impresses with his background score which lifts the film to another level. Camerawork is sleek as the rural atmosphere is shown quite naturally. Production values are just about ok, and so is the dubbing for the film.

Verdict:-

On the whole, Pandem Kollu will be a decent outing for Dhanush in Tollywood. His amazing performance and an entertaining love track in the first half will be liked by the masses. However, a slow and dragged out second half and too much Tamil nativity might limit the reach of the film.

Plot[edit]

Balu (Vishal) visits his friend Karthik's (Raja) home in Chidambaram after completion of engineering. He meets Hema (Meera Jasmine), Karthik's sister, and they develop an affection which transforms into love. Kasi (Lal) is the local gangster in Chidambaram who is feared by the entire town. Balu, on his way back to his place, sees Kasi chasing a man with a sickle. When Kasi was about to kill the man he was chasing, Balu interferes and stops Kasi. An angered Kasi immediately tries to attack Balu, and to save himself, Balu retaliates by hitting Kasi. Only then, Balu comes to know that the person he hit is Kasi. To everyone's surprise, Balu smashes Kasi in front of everyone and leaves.

Kasi is furious and wants to take revenge on Balu. Kasi's men trap Karthik's father and get to know about Balu's native place. Kasi sets goons to kill Balu but gets shocked when he knows that Balu's father is Durai (Rajkiran), a powerful man in Madurai, and it will be very difficult to attack them. Kasi leaves to Madurai and waits for the right moment to kill Balu and his family. Meanwhile, Balu meets Hema and her family at a temple. Hema's father initially gets angry seeing Balu as he was responsible to bring trouble by hitting Kasi, but later, Balu convinces him. Both the families decide to get Balu and Hema married to each other.

One day, Kasi tries to kill Balu but instead attacks Durai. Durai understands that Balu is being targeted and decides to protect him. A localite in Madurai (Thalaivasal Vijay) hates Durai and his family and decides to help Kasi so Durai can get killed. Kasi decides to bring in violence during a temple festival day and utilize that opportunity to kill Balu and Durai. But Balu saves Durai and fights Kasi.
